Investigate and demonstrate practical applications of Newton's Laws

Physics Objective and Standards

  • 1. Students will identify, describe, compare and contrast the different types of forces.

    2. Students will be able to identify, explain and demonstrate how forces interact using the concepts of balanced and unbalanced forces

    3. Students will be able to identify, summarize and demonstrate how Newton's Laws explain motion.

Vocabulary to Know

Newtons Laws of Motion

First Law:   An object in motion will stay in motion and an object at rest will stay at rest unless acted on by an outside force.

- motion   - inertia   - balanced forces  - unbalanced forces   - distance    - reference point

Second Law:

If an outside force acts on a body it will accelerate in the direction of the force.  The amount of acceleration depends on the mass of the object. The more mass the more force needed to move it.

-  force  -  net force    - velocity    - speed  - acceleration    - friction    -  gravity   -  weight     - mass     - air resistance

Third Law:    For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

- action     - reaction
